USB 3.2 Standard Incoming: Dual 10Gbps Lanes, Apple Likely to Be an Early Adopter

Time:2024-07-01 Views:

The USB 3.2 standard promises speeds of 20Gbps through existing Type-C cables, according to the USB 3.0 Promoter Group. They revealed on Tuesday that USB 3.2 connections will feature two lanes capable of operating at up to 10 gigabits per second. Both the originating and receiving devices must be compatible with USB 3.2, but the intervening Type-C cable can be an already existing 10-gigabit one.

The new standard is currently in the "final draft review phase" and is anticipated to be officially released by September. Apple, a notable member of the Promoter Group, is expected to be an early adopter of this technology. The company has a history of quickly adopting new connection standards, including Thunderbolt and USB itself. The 12-inch Retina MacBook, for instance, was among the first computers to exclusively ship with USB-C ports.

Theoretically, Apple could incorporate USB 3.2 into the iMac Pro, which is expected to arrive in December and will feature four USB-C/Thunderbolt ports.
